What if God never gave you what you want?
Would you still love him?
Would you still trust him?
Would you still follow him?
If God never gave you what you desperately long for in this life, would you still be a Christian?
This question popped into my mind earlier this week, and I've been turning it over in my head ever since. In the past, I've heard pastors refer to a certain perspective as a "vending machine" God, where people to view God as a way to get what they want.
This is not the God I know.
Yet the question remains in my mind. If I live my whole life and never end up with a book published, or never get to see what I write come to fruition in a completed package, be it book or film, would I still follow God?
The Sunday School goer in me wants to say, "Yes, of course." And that may be true. God is good and he will provide what we need. He will also bless us with what we want. But he doesn't have to, and it's because of his love for us that he does.
But this makes me wonder: if I didn't get what I want, what would I get that I need?
I don't know that I could ever know the answer to that question. But I can trust that God knows, and that he is working for my good and the good of those who love him, even when what's good for us isn't what we want.
So, I ask you:
If you didn't get what you want, what would you get that you need?
